While technology and innovation policies have been successful in rapidly scaling up renewable technologies such as solar and wind in the past decade, the breadth of innovation and the way it has been coordinated have been disappointing. Because investments in energy technology typically require long investment horizons and entail high technological risks, the sector has struggled to attract syndicated funding, or to align the investments of those active in the space bringing innovation without disrupting the existing investments, i.e. supply chain and manufacturing infrastructure. A radical new approach to energy innovation is needed if the sector is to meet the demands placed on it by the Paris Climate Agreement and play a positive role in the fight against climate change.
Battery energy storage is the backbone for future growth of renewable energy and the transformation of the global electric mobility market towards new energy. Unleashing the full power of entrepreneurship and innovation across the energy storage system is at the crux of delivering global climate goals and spurring new opportunities for growth. We define energy storage as a combination of battery systems that store energy for infrastructure needs and that drive the electric vehicles across different segments.
To accelerate this New Energy revolution, the Green Charge Ventures will utilize their deep knowledge of technology, manufacturing, and energy businesses to establish the Green Investment Fund (“Fund”). The Fund is structured to take advantage of the fourth industrial revolution to bring about a step change in investments and accelerate the pace at which new storage technologies are brought to market and converted into successful businesses. For the industry, the timing couldn’t be any better, with massive investments (>$100B) already permeated throughout the value chain in last 3 years. On an international level, this global fund will provide a secured, strategic and focused financing mechanism to tackle some of tomorrow’s most important energy technology challenges. The Fund aims to make early-scale (typically, series A and series B stages, but not limited to these), medium-term to long-term investments in companies and platform businesses that have the potential to spark the next generation of innovations within the energy storage.
The Green Investment Fund aims to create a group of like-minded companies that will benefit from the symbiotic relationship that will be formed through its platform. The focus areas of investment for the fund include:
